My First Comic Book Class 1994
This is the cover from a collection of comics created by students at a Comic Book Class back in 1994. I’m guessing it was offered at a community center probably in Arlington. Pretty crazy, considering the fact that was 15 years ago and I was only 12 at the time. I tried tracking down the teacher on google but no real luck. I remember going to this class and not really being terribly social at the time. I bet I didn’t even say a word in the class, but I am so glad I had such an awesome Mom that even thought to take me that summer to something so cool. That was ironically enough probably the peak of my interest in comics and illustrating and it’s not until now that I am as excited as I was then about comics and story telling.
I enjoyed the fact that he misspelled the name of my comic though. Maybe “Tim Knight” would have been much better, maybe not. I do remember the kid that was listed at the top though, probably because he was the one who drew the most pages. I’m pretty sure he was older and understood contrast and serious story telling much better than I did at the time, granted he was probably only 16 or 17…..some real mature content I’m sure.
I can tell even then that I lacked the ability to rightly draw out the dialogue and set the right pace of the action. Everything was fast and action packed…good for a low budget indie film?
Man…that was a kick butt action sequence….good job 12 year old me! Not entirely sure why I decided to have the title panel at the very end, I guess for build up? Anyways, I would like to think that I was allot more creative and loose with my arrangement back then. Might even be fun to color this series, or even redraw it now…hmmm?
This was the back cover of the comic book collection. It was actually the first time I ever drew something straight to a computer using a mouse. I can vividly remember the fascination of using my Aunt’s computer to make a picture without drawing. I’m pretty sure I used some kind of Paint program, but it was on an old school mac.
Anyways, this is the first of many entries featuring artwork from my childhood….hope you enjoyed it half as much as I did!

That artwork is fantastic for that age! You showed a lot of promise. What’s funny is I have taught cartooning classes for a while now. Going on 11 or 12 years. Its weird that kids who were 11 or 12 in one of my classes, are now part of the sketch club and in their mid 20’s. Very surreal! This guy looks like he taught a much better class then I did though, lol.
Still, I can only imagine what taking a comic book art class at a young age would be like. It must be a cool experience. I hope that kids think that about the sketch club too.
But that has to be cool to actually get to see those kids grow up and develop on a creative and personal level from a teacher mentor perspective. This class was only for a couple of weeks I think, and I unfortunately didn’t really bond with any of the other kids or talk to the teacher much at all. It was a cool experience for sure at that age, I only wish the 12 year old me would have continued making comics then. I guess thats what happens when you have too many other interests like sports and videogames at the time.
Very nice action, indeed! I love the “shing” sound and the kneeling on the slayed robot carcass, just before the ending title panel.
