Bro-and-Sis-watchin-cartoons-082010-JS

I had a blast at work this week making this picture.  The short story described a boy who had just come home from playing at his friends house.  Smelling the sweet aroma of homemade spaghetti in the kitchen (ironically enough my amazing wife made that very dish the same evening I finished this piece), the boy passes through the living room past Dad’s depressing news show, only to find his sister watching something extremely lively and entertaining in the den….CARTOONS!!!  I had soooo much fun coloring this piece….and the dinner that evening was just as enjoyable :)

Rover 51

WT_rover51_JS

This was a painting I did in Photoshop this past Sunday for our most recent Artosaurs theme “Robots”.  I had way too much fun making this.  My son Jaiden and I decided to do a piece based directly off a character in the recent animated film Planet 51 that is named Rover.  Rover has the characteristics of a dog, and made for some really great moments in the film.  Originally, Jaiden and I discussed doing a character like Rover that was a bit different, but ultimately he liked the idea of staying true to the original.  Doing a quick piece like this excites me to someday do the same for my own characters and environments.

Golden Boy

golden boy blogNot really sure where the idea for this quick sketch turned painting came from.  Have a feeling that it is somehow related to watching Friday Night Lights though.  I had fun with this piece, even though I left it a bit rough.  I was trying some Photoshop brushes that I got for free from  ChrisOatley.com. If you haven’t heard of him or visited his site then I highly recommend checking it out.  He also has an amazing podcast called “Chris Oatley’s Art Cast“.  I have been listening to it all week at work and it has been beyond inspiring and encouraging!  It certainly helps that he works for Disney currently as well :)  Being an artist for Disney was something I always dreamed of as a kid, so at the very least I have been inspired to work harder toward raising the quality of my work to the level of other artist working in the “big leagues”.

garfield-final

I had an itch to draw Garfield this week for our weekly theme.  It’s probably been about 20 yrs since I’ve drawn this famous cartoon cat.  I can remember laying on the living room floor with my brother Mike on a Sunday afternoon and drawing from our favorite Sunday comics.  I may even still have a copy of those childhood drawings that I can post to the archive section sometime.

WT-Plants-041610-JSWell….I am back to posting to my art blog finally.  It’s not that I haven’t been making art every week, but I just haven’t been posting my weekly entries to my site as well.  So from here on out, I will be posting my entries for the Artosaurs Weekly Theme on my site and linking back to the groups site.  For those of you that haven’t checked it out already, Artosaurs is site that some friends of mine help contribute to each week and has been a great way to motivate me to do something on my own atleast once a week.  The themes have been thick with potential and the entries keep getting better and better as time goes on.  This week’s theme was PLANTS and I really had nothing until today when I was driving the car to pick up dinner.  My son Jaiden wanted to tell me about a great idea he had for a soccer ball with several tiny umbrellas surrounding it to protect it from all the rain.  Brilliant!!!  So I combined a few inspirations I already had swirling in my head with this idea of an umbrella hat on a sunflower.  Ofcourse, with all the rain this week, it only seemed right to have such a theme.  Cheer up Sunny…..it’s only going to rain for another week or so :) Atleast it isn’t snowing.
