Rover 51

This was a painting I did in Photoshop this past Sunday for our most recent Artosaurs theme “Robots”.  I had way too much fun making this.  My son Jaiden and I decided to do a piece based directly off a character in the recent animated film Planet 51 that is named Rover.  Rover has the characteristics of a dog, and made for some really great moments in the film.  Originally, Jaiden and I discussed doing a character like Rover that was a bit different, but ultimately he liked the idea of staying true to the original.  Doing a quick piece like this excites me to someday do the same for my own characters and environments.

Golden Boy

golden boy blogNot really sure where the idea for this quick sketch turned painting came from.  Have a feeling that it is somehow related to watching Friday Night Lights though.  I had fun with this piece, even though I left it a bit rough.  I was trying some Photoshop brushes that I got for free from  ChrisOatley.com. If you haven’t heard of him or visited his site then I highly recommend checking it out.  He also has an amazing podcast called “Chris Oatley’s Art Cast“.  I have been listening to it all week at work and it has been beyond inspiring and encouraging!  It certainly helps that he works for Disney currently as well :)  Being an artist for Disney was something I always dreamed of as a kid, so at the very least I have been inspired to work harder toward raising the quality of my work to the level of other artist working in the “big leagues”.

A Love for Digital Painting

February 22nd, 2010 admin No comments

This was a digital painting I did for my wife for Valentine’s Day.  I did a search for roses on the internet and this was the coolest one I came across.  It was great for turning into good practice at the art of painting in photoshop.  The finished result looked as good, if not better, than anything I did during my studio days at Texas Tech.  It was also nice that it only took me about 45 minutes to do (while the kids were napping) and didn’t involve any cleanup.  Funny how several of the same techniques I used with that medium carried over to this piece.  I still have those memories of my clothes being covered in charcoal when coming back to the dorms my freshman year after another 3 hours class of drawing….good times!  Anyways, I hope to get better at this and maybe start doing pieces for other people in the future…..atleast making some very nice prints for starters :)

Dream Ship

January 9th, 2010 admin No comments

I had a little fun today in Photoshop.  After watching Peter Pan with Jaiden I couldn’t help myself from drawing my own flying ship.  I enjoy imagining the view from the boat and allowing myself to see the clouds come to life.  I think I am remembering how much I enjoyed watching Disney movies as a kid and the importance of imagination and finding that peaceful place to rest.  A Saturday well spent..with friends and family…I hope to make a habit of it.
